Collectibles - Autograph Verification
The Internet provides people with a vast pool of resources for personalized memorabilia and other collectibles. However, it is also true that it also inundated with deceptive dealers who are trying to cheat collectors with forgeries.
A lot of sellers advertise non-authentic autographs, because it is easy to trick someone who does not know a lot about the industry or are buying for the first time. The buyers believe that the autographed collectibles are authentic because they do not realize how to spot a fake.
To ensure that the customer feels safe, some sellers go as far as supplying them with falsified proofs of authenticity and warranties. Others present their collectibles with holograms to try and pass the goods off as a proof of a genuine autograph and themselves off as genuine dealers.
Most buyers are not knowledgeable enough to be capable of distinguishing between an autograph that is genuine and an autograph that is a fake. Also, the truth is that the pictures that you view online or the autographs given can be scanned or it may not be clear enough to make a proper determination.
When you buy on Internet, just because a seller has good feedback, it is not at all a promise that he will be promoting authentically signed memorabilia. The good feedback may only be owing to the fact that he provides speedy and competent service in shipping out the bought items. Usually, feedback must be given within 60 days, sometimes too soon for the forgery to be discovered and for the buyer to even file a claim with the auction company. In reality, the police have arrested many phony traders who distribute and sell fake autographs and collectibles. They were known to have had excellent feedbacks and an affirmative feedback ranking was preserved.
At the same time, it is very tough for buyers to ascertain if a certain autograph is authentic or not while seeing it online, and the problem is not diminished once the piece is received. As a matter of fact, most of the purchasers only come to realize that the autographed piece they bought is a counterfeit when they test for genuineness via an appraisal or when a knowledgeable collector or an authority on the subject notifies them so.
